ST. MARY’S BAY, N.L. — The mayor of a small community on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula has called the poaching charges against him unfounded, reports a recent CBC News story.

Melvin Careen, the mayor of St. Mary’s Bay at Point Lance, was charged in August with poaching salmon, but he told the CBC he found the 43 fish in question at the side of a pond.

According to the CBC report, Careen is not planning to step down from his volunteer role as mayor. The matter is set to go to trial on Nov. 9.
